A Marrakech to Merzouga excursion in 3 days is one of Morocco’s classic travel routes. It is long, but it is also the most complete way to connect Marrakech with real Sahara dunes without turning the trip into a rushed overnight sprint.

Sahara desert camp in Merzouga at sunrise
A 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga route is the practical minimum for real Sahara dunes.

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades

The first day crosses the High Atlas through Tizi n’Tichka. The road is scenic, with mountain villages and wide views. The main cultural stop is usually Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar built from earth and straw, followed by Ouarzazate and the road toward Dades.

Day 2: Dades to Merzouga

The second day moves through Todra Gorge, palm groves and towns such as Erfoud and Rissani before reaching Merzouga. By late afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear and the desert part of the excursion begins.

Most travelers enter the camp by camel or 4×4, then watch sunset, have dinner and sleep near the dunes.

Day 3: sunrise and return to Marrakech

The final day starts early with sunrise in the dunes. After breakfast, the route returns toward Marrakech. It is a long driving day, so comfort, organization and realistic timing matter.

Is three days enough?

Three days is the practical minimum for Merzouga from Marrakech. Four days is more relaxed, but three days works well when the itinerary is clear and the stops are chosen carefully.
